Since taking office a year ago, Prime Minister Mark Carney has used his political power to take Canada faster and further down the path of corporate rule than many expected. On September 14–15, he is hosting an Investment Summit in Toronto, where he has invited over 100 private investors to browse the sale of public infrastructure like hospitals and airports, housing stock, highways, hydro-dams, the defence industry, and critical minerals. Promising jobs and economic growth, this strategy is the same privatization and austerity agenda in hyper-mode that has been driving the massive and widening income gap for decades.
At the heart of this approach is an attack on Indigenous people and lands, workers, migrants, climate, and our public services. A Peoples’ Counter-Summit: This major mobilization will highlight whose interests Carney is really serving and build unity in action across movements and organizations at this crucial moment. It is being organized by a broad coalition of unions, Indigenous movements, migrant justice organizers, healthcare, education, and public service workers, anti-racist and anti-fascist organizers, climate justice groups, care economy activists, and so many more.
